GLITTER GAYE CHAPMAN 2006
"The embrace of sentimental imagery may well be the most radical and avant-garde stance possible for a contemporary artist to take"
N. Capasso. "Pretty Sweet: The Sentimental Image in Contemporary Art". DeCordova Museum. USA. 2005
The "Glitter" paintings search the dark abyss between the Sentimental, Pretty and Sweet in the search for Beauty. If Pretty is surface deep then glitter is the ultimate surface - Pretty Sweet Deviant Art - showered with glitter, both as matter + subject matter, and as medium + metaphor. The " Glitter " paintings are redolent with sentimental seduction and enchantment. They are the ornamental, picturesque and kitsch memento-mori of the domestic feminine - the plants, birds and insects found in my grandmother's garden. " Glitter " hybridises minimalism with the highly decorative. " Glitter " subverts the decorative image as both a site for luscious desire, and as a dark repository reflecting bitterness, loss and deep divisions about sentimentality and the avant-garde between classes, genders and politics.
" A shower of girlie pink glitter erupts. I love glitter and I love butterflies, such a girlie girl - deviant art ". Anon.
